Sex & Death is a new startup company in Lancaster, soon to be dealing in custom clothing. The fantastic Rebekah Whitaker needed my help turning her idea into a brand.
When Rebekah first approached me she had quite a loose idea of what she wanted. All I had was a list of words like
Metalhead, Goth, Grunge… and so on. She provided links to a couple of fonts she liked and we went from there. We decided it would be a good idea to look into occult symbols and collected together lots of imagery for inspiration.
I used the fonts Rebekah sent me as a guide and collected together a range of higher quality typefaces we could use. After more discussion and looking at these fonts together, the direction for the Sex & Death brand became much clearer.
It was very important to Rebekah that we steered clear of the American Rock / Retro cliché. Her logo needed to have British roots. It had to appeal to a female Goth / Rock / Metal market, without being too girly.
Together we chose a font that fitted perfectly. I customised the lettering and using inspiration from Celtic, Wiccan and Occult research, found symbology that fit synonymously with her brand. For the finishing touch, I used distressing techniques to give the logo a rough grunge appearance. I drafted various layout options to choose from and kept Rebekah involved in the whole process – from start to finish. The final logo was supplied in scalable vector format so it can be printed at any size without loosing quality.
Rebekah was blown away with the results.
F*king love it Rose! she said.
